Impact of Capacitor Energy Storage Spot Welder Rigidity on Electrode Force

The impact of rigidity of capacitor energy storage spot welding machine is directly reflected in the electrode force signal collected during the welding process. We conducted detailed experiments on the influence of rigidity. In the experiments, we only considered the rigidity of the lower part of the base welder structure, as the upper structure is movable and has high rigidity. The rigidity of the spring between the stationary electrode and the support structure of the base welder was adjusted to provide two different rigidity values for the welder: 88 kN/mm and 52.5 kN/mm.

It can be seen that although the contact process of the electrodes in these two cases is very similar, and the paths to reach the set value of the welder electrode force are almost identical, there is a significant difference in electrode force between the two cases when current is applied. The increment of electrode force during welding under low rigidity is 133N (30lb), while under high rigidity, it is 334N (75lb), indicating that higher rigidity leads to greater changes in electrode force.

Welders with different rigidity provide different electrode forces, hence different constraints on nugget growth. Under high rigidity conditions, nugget expansion is more difficult because higher rigidity results in greater reactive forces from the electrodes.
